Medical tourism

Health is our most precious treasure and we believe it should be a privilege of all. As your committed medical travel facilitator we wish to promote the highest standard health care on a global scale and guide patients towards the best medical solutions.

612577 The globalization of health care has opened up a whole new perspective for both patients and health care providers. We wish to explore the potentials of this dynamically increasing trend and connect patients in need to the world’s most reputable medical tourist destinations, specialist and accredited, patient-driven hospitals Europe and worldwide.

Our mission is to serve as reliable source of information for patients on quality and affordable medical options beyond the borders, raise people’s awareness about the abundance of choices they have and offer alternatives where local health care fails to satisfy patient’s needs. Our aim is to promote global health and the general availability of quality medical services. We closely cooperate with a number of health care providers in Europe and around the world in our joint effort to ensure high-quality, accredited and transparent health care at an affordable, clear pricing.

Quality health care is within your reach, and with the possibilities of international travel and global quality assurance systems, searching for medical treatments beyond the borders is more convenient and safer than ever.

Medical tourism is the travel of people to a place other than where they normally reside for the purpose of obtaining medical treatment in that country. Traditionally, people would travel from less-developed countries to major medical centers in highly developed countries for medical treatment that was unavailable in their own communities; the recent trend is for people to travel from developed countries to third-world countries for medical treatments because of cost consideration, though the traditional pattern still continues. Another reason for travel for medical treatment is that some treatments may not be legal in the home country, such as some fertility procedures.

Some people travel to obtain medical surgeries or other treatments. Some people go abroad for dental tourism or fertility tourism. People with rare genetic disorders may travel to another country where treatment of these conditions is better understood. However, virtually every type of health care, including psychiatry, alternative treatments, convalescent care and even burial services, is available.

Health tourism is a wider term for travels that focus on medical treatments and the utilization of healthcare services. It spans a wide field of health-oriented tourism ranging from preventive and health-conductive to rehabilitational and curative forms of travel; the latter being commonly referred to as Medical tourism. Wellness tourism is another related field.

612577 Swiss healthcare is outstanding. Its combined public, subsidised private and totally private healthcare system create an extensive network of highly qualified doctors (many of them from elsewhere in the EU) and hospitals, the best equipped medical facilities and no waiting lists, but it all comes at a price: around 10 percent of the average Swiss salary goes towards health insurance premiums. There is no free state health service in Switzerland.

Unlike other European countries, the Swiss healthcare system is not tax based or financed by employers but is paid for by the individual through contributions into health insurance schemes. The system is universal but it is administered by individual cantons. This means that everyone living in Switzerland must have basic health and accident insurance (Soziale Krankenversicherung / Assurance maladie / Assicurazione-Mallatie). You pay monthly premiums to the insurer and you also have to pay a contribution towards the cost of medical consultations and treatments. Each family member must be insured individually. Babies are insured from birth but to continue cover, you have to take out health insurance for a child within three months of the birth. Children don’t need to be insured by the same company as their parents. As at 2014, an adult pays around CHF 400 in health insurance premiums.

If you are in Switzerland for less than three months, you may be exempted from the requirement for holding basic health insurance if you have an European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), your own health insurance policy, travel insurance or a company healthcare plan – but check with your cantonal authorities to make sure.

After three months everyone has to have organised cover with an authorised Swiss insurer even if you have an international health insurance policy, as these are not usually recognised in Switzerland.

Many people top up the basic cover with supplementary private health insurance. Switzerland has one of the largest private healthcare sectors in the world.

MOST CONSULTED SPECIALTIES

- Gynaecology and obstetrics
Gynaecology is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of specifically female health problems. Gynaecologists are responsible for the treatment of functional disorders in the conception cycle and the detection of cancers of the sex organs.

Obstetrics is concerned with the observation of the course of pregnancy, any ailments occurring in the course of pregnancy and the birth itself, as well as the associated follow-up treatments.

In our hospitals you will find experts in all the areas of gynaecological and urogynaecological surgery, breast medicine, early detection by photomedicine and oncology: - Obstetrics, the treatment of problems in puberty, the treatment of infertility, gynaecological oncology and breast medicine are the subject of outpatient consultations.
- Gynaecological surgery uses endoscopic procedures to treat lesions of the vagina and uterus, where possible without trauma.
- Laparoscopy enables surgery to be performed on the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus, where possible without postoperative trauma.

Urogynaecological surgery is concerned with the treatment of incontinence. Many women suffer from incontinence symptoms after a certain age, but also after one or more births. Oncological gynaecology is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of tumours. Breast cancer treatments nowadays include the use of breast-conserving procedures, by means of which tumours can be removed without amputating the breast.

- Radiology
Radiology uses X-rays for therapeutic or diagnostic purposes. It is one of the techniques of medical imaging, alongside CT scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound imaging. The decision to use a specific technique is taken by the radiologist, with the patient‘s condition being the deciding factor. These techniques serve to determine the site and precise extent of a lesion, tumour or bleed.

- Oncology
Medical oncology is concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancers. The diagnosis sets the scene for treatment by the oncologists. Chemotherapy, hormonal treatments, immunotherapy or “targeted” cancer therapies are available. The dose, the dosage schedule and the combination of individual agents depend on the patient‘s condition and the nature of their diseases. Medicines for controlling tumours are either administered orally, injected or infused by drip. Drip infusions require either outpatient (lasting a few hours) or hospital treatment (from two to several days’ duration). Chemotherapies can cause unwanted side effects. Research and practice strive to limit these side effects to a minimum.

- General surgery
General surgery is concerned with the acute treatment of frequent diseases of all systems. The specialists concerned possess extensive knowledge of visceral surgery, traumatology and the treatment of common health problems (hernias, appendicitis).

- Paediatrics and neonatology
Neonatology is one of the paediatric subspecialties. It is concerned with neonates (newborn babies), from prenatal diagnosis through the care of premature and full-term infants, to the characteristic diseases of this phase of life.

- Plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery
Plastic surgery is a surgical subspecialty concerned with reconstructive surgery, in other words the treatment of accident-related deformities, congenital malformations or the removal of tumours, while cosmetic surgery is concerned with corrections of appearance without an actual disease being present.

Breast enlargements and reductions, dermabrasion with laser procedures, facelifts, liposuction, rhinoplasty (correction of the shape of the nose), the creation of missing ears and eyelid lifts are among the most common procedures.

MOST CONSULTED SPECIALTIES

- Orthopaedics and traumatology
Orthopaedics and traumatology belong to the surgical specialties; they are concerned with degenerative and trauma-related diseases of the locomotor apparatus and spinal column, i.e. all the bones and joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles that are responsible for movement.

Orthopaedics is used in many cases: bone fractures of the limbs or spinal column, dislocations of joints, muscle tears, bone tumours and infections or advanced osteoarthritis (of the hip and/or knee) in which the joint is partially or completely replaced by a prosthesis.

- Gynaecology
Gynaecology is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of specifically female health problems. Gynaecologists are responsible for the treatment of functional disorders in the conception cycle and the detection of cancers of the sex organs.

Experts in all areas of gynaecological and urogynaecological surgery, breast medicine, early detection by photomedicine and oncology can be found in our hospitals:
- Obstetrics, screening tests, treatment of problems associated with puberty, treatment of infertility, gynaecological oncology and breast medicine are the subject of outpatient consultations.
- Gynaecological surgery uses endoscopic procedures to treat lesions of the vagina and uterus, as far as possible without trauma.
- Laparoscopy enables surgical procedures to be performed on the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus, as far as possible without postoperative trauma.
- Urogynaecological surgery is concerned with the treatment of incontinence. Many women suffer from incontinence symptoms after a certain age, but also after one or more births.

- Breast cancer treatments nowadays include the use of breast-conserving procedures by means of which tumours can be removed without amputating the breasts.

- Neurosurgery
Neurosurgery is concerned with the surgical treatment of diseases of the nervous system. In consultation with neurologists, neurosurgeons investigate problems resulting from disorders of the nervous system. Neurosurgeons can operate on brain tumours, spinal cord tumours, herniated discs of the cervical and lumbar spine or cerebral haemorrhages (bleeding in the brain) and undertake surgical treatments of pain.

Neurosurgery is optimized by microsurgery with the aid of a surgical microscope. This technique allows more precise and minimally invasive surgery.

- General surgery
General surgery is concerned with the acute treatment of frequent diseases of all systems. The specialists concerned possess extensive knowledge of visceral surgery, traumatology and the treatment of common health problems (hernias, appendicitis).

- Hand surgery
Hand surgery as a specialty is concerned with impairments of hand function. This includes lesions of the upper extremities of a traumatic, congenital or degenerative nature that do not always require surgery for treatment: in most cases, targeted medical treatment (orthotics, physiotherapy, injections or medicines) produces an improvement or cure of the condition.

- Ear, nose and throat medicine (ENT)
Ear, nose and throat medicine (ENT) includes diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of diseases, injuries and malformations of the ear, the nose, the paranasal sinuses incl. lacrimal ducts, the oral cavity, oropharynx and hypopharynx, larynx, salivary gland, thyroid, parathyroid glands, the base of skull, the face and neck at any age.

ENT examines hearing, the sense of balance and the sense of smell and taste using highly developed facilities and in this way can make precise diagnoses. Ear, nose and throat diseases can be treated by medicines or surgery.

Various surgical methods are used to treat certain hearing disorders, snoring, nasal polyps, chronic sinusitis and recurrent infections in the ENT sphere.

We are committed to making sure you receive a gentle and caring welcome. With us, you are in good hands.

The Clinic’s activities encompass the main surgical disciplines of ophthalmology, orthopaedics and traumatology, radiology, neurosurgery, gynaecology and cosmetic surgery. It was founded in 1932 by Professor R. L. Rochat, an eminent gynaecologist, and extended in 1964.

Our whole team will strive ceaselessly to provide you with the utmost quality of care and a warm welcome, not to mention top-class hotel comfort and catering.

At the service of patients at all times

Since its establishment in 1932, the Clinique de Montchoisi has always been one of the most respected and most famous institutions in the Canton of Vaud. Acquired by the Swiss Medical Network group in 2003, it is been completely renovated and modernized.

Located at the very heart of Lausanne, not far from the station, it is surrounded by an oasis of green and enjoys considerable tranquillity. Close to a number of parks, it merges discreetly into its setting. All the rooms enjoy clear and sublime views over Lake Geneva and the Alps. The top floor houses a presidential suite and comfortable and spacious junior suites.

The Clinique de Montchoisi has forged an international reputation in ophthalmology, particularly in the management of glaucoma and cataract, with numerous discoveries and revolutionary treatments. With more than 20 FMH* accredited specialists in this department, it offers first-rate treatment for glaucoma, cataract, reticular macular degeneration, corneal grafts, etc.

As a multidisciplinary institution, the clinic offers high quality services in general surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology and plastic surgery. We would also like to highlight the new medical imaging department which was inaugurated at the end of 2010, dedicated to neuroradiology, osteoarticular radiology and imaging for women.

Located in the centre of the city, the clinic with its 45-space underground car park is easily accessible.

Patients and their visitors are at leisure to visit the “La Pergola” restaurant, whose menu and terrace with its superb panorama are renowned far and wide.

An integral part of the Clinic, the restaurant also allows the general public unrestricted access.

- Visceral Surgery
Visceral surgery is concerned with diseases of the organs of the digestive tract, but also the diaphragm and other abdominal organs such as the spleen and endocrine glands (for example the thyroid). In our hospitals, surgeons use both conventional surgical techniques (laparotomy) and also ultramodern minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopy (the introduction of specific surgical instruments by means of a keyhole technique and instrument guidance via a link to a camera, which provides a direct image of the affected organs). Visceral surgery also includes endocrinological procedures, surgery of the mammary glands, surgical oncology and proctology (diseases of the anus and rectum).

- Gynaecology and obstetrics
Gynaecology is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of specifically female health problems. Gynaecologists are responsible for the treatment of functional disorders in the conception cycle and the detection of cancers of the sex organs.

- Urology
At the interface between medicine and surgery, urology is concerned with the treatment of diseases of the urinary tract in men and women and the male genital system. Numerous diseases fall within its scope: bladder stones, kidney tumours, bladder tumours, prostate and testicular tumours, functional neurological disorders of the bladder, urinary tract infections, etc. In addition, urologists deal with malformations of the male genital tract, particularly in the case of infertility and erection problems. The techniques used in urology are tending to become increasingly less aggressive. Bladder stones are treated by extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (destruction by the action of shock waves) or endoscopically (insertion of a tube equipped with a camera and surgical instruments into the urinary tract).

- General internal medicine
General internal medicine is concerned with all clinical questions that are not of a surgical nature. General internists view their patients holistically for diagnostic purposes, as well as for the purpose of thorough investigations, summaries of clinical problems and the organization and monitoring of treatments. The specialists concerned are responsible for the monitoring, prevention, nursing and treatment of their patients and thus ensure their constant health care and long-term well-being.

- -Oncological gynaecology is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of tumours.
- Breast cancer treatments nowadays include the use of breast-conserving procedures by means of which tumours can be removed without amputating the breasts.

- General surgery
General surgery is concerned with the acute treatment of frequent diseases of all systems. The specialists concerned possess extensive knowledge of visceral surgery, traumatology and the treatment of common health problems (hernias, appendicitis).

- Spinal surgery
Spinal surgery sits at the interface between neurosurgery and orthopaedic surgery. It is concerned in particular with the treatment of diseases of the spine, such as traumas, deformities and deviations, tumours and degenerative diseases (for example osteoarthritis).

- Anesthesia / anesthesia
Anesthesia deals with anesthesia, resuscitation and pain relief. In the case of anesthesia in the actual sense, the sensations in a part of the body (local or regional anesthesia) or the entire body (total anesthesia) are suppressed with the aid of medicaments. Mostly anesthesia to facilitate surgical procedures are performed.

In the preoperative visit the anesthetist sets the question for the patient and the planned intervention appropriate anesthetic procedures. The usual anesthesia techniques are epidural, peridural, spinal or general anesthesia (general anesthesia). During the actual operation, the anesthetist monitors the vital functions of the patient; in the postoperative phase, he ensures his recovery and pain relief.

- Rheumatology
Rheumatology is concerned with diseases of the joints, bones and soft tissues. The only common denominator of these diseases is impairment of the functional capacity of the locomotor apparatus as a result of pain or stiffness. This involves in particular diseases of the skeleton (osteoporosis, osteomalacia), degenerative diseases of the joints (osteoarthritis, diseases of the back ), inflammation (rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, vasculitis), periarticular diseases (inflammation of the tendon sheath, periarthritis) and muscle diseases (sprains, myositis).

- Interventional pain therapy
The Schmerzklinik Basel has an Intermediate Care unit with 12 intensive care beds for the administration and supervision of treatments for outpatients. Specialist nursing staff from the anaesthesia and intensive care medicine departments administer the necessary infusions on medical instruction and monitor vital signs.

Referrals for these procedures come both from the outpatient and inpatient sector of the Schmerzklinik and from community-based colleagues who are unwilling or unable to perform these infusion treatments in their practice. An anaesthetist is always on hand. There is some pain that cannot be relieved by physiotherapeutic, medicinal or other conservative treatments. In most cases this is associated with chronic disorders of the locomotor apparatus following injury, surgery or as a result of age-related changes. Frequently the resultant pain is complicated by what is known as pain memory. In this case, specialists from the Interventional Pain Diagnosis and Therapy department provide additional help with special treatment methods.

If causal treatment of chronic pain is no longer possible, methods for symptomatic pain control that are technologically very effective are available in the form of interventional pain therapy. These range from targeted infiltrations of autonomic and sensory nerves (step therapy), via catheter treatments (for example in scars) and targeted electrotherapy (with pulsed and warm radio frequency) of nerves and discs, to the implantation of electrical spinal cord stimulators or pump systems.

In most cases, the procedures are carried out on an outpatient basis, otherwise a stay is booked on the clinic‘s own ward to allow the correct action to be taken in the event of an infusion reaction.

- Neurology
Neurology is concerned with the investigation and treatment of diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system (brain, spinal cord and/or roots and nerves) and muscle diseases.

Neurologists also deal with migraines and other types of headache, dizziness and other disturbances of balance, facial pain, pain from the cervical spine and arms as well as low back pain and sciatica.

- Psychology
Chronic pain disorders and psychosomatic conditions are the focus of treatment in the Psychology Department. In addition, we offer psychotherapeutic support in psychological crises with depressive reactions, burn-out, anxiety and panic disorders, and psychological traumas. For concentration and memory problems, we also offer measurements of mental performance using neuropsychological test procedures.

Both our nervous system and our feelings and sensations are involved in processing impressions. Physically experienced pain does not always have a precisely defined physical origin. That is why we also take account of the patient‘s psychological state in their diagnosis and therapy. Psychodiagnosis provides our specialists with important clues as to how their patients can be counselled and treated appropriately and specifically.

Even purely physically induced pain can trigger anxiety and worry, wear away at our strength and exhaust our psychological resources. In our cooperative and holistic medical concept of diagnosis and treatment, patients therefore have the opportunity to investigate the relationships between chronic pain and psychosocial stress factors more thoroughly with professional assistance. In this way, previously unrecognized trigger factors can be identified and pain control improved.

Once pain has become chronic, it is often no longer possible to identify specific causes because a pain memory has been created that frequently responds inadequately to drugs and other pharmacological forms of treatment.

Chronic pain often causes victims severe stress, which can lead to anxiety, depression and sleep disorders.

Relief can be provided here by learning relaxation procedures and management techniques, as well as psychotherapy.

Our services:
Psychotherapy (focus areas: behavioural therapy, Gestalt therapy)
Consulting/coaching sessions for techniques to overcome pain
Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR)
Biofeedback
Behavioural therapy headache group
Neuropsychological diagnostics:
Mental function profile or cognitive assessment
Tests for dementia

- Anaesthesiology/Anaesthesia
Anaesthesia is concerned with anaesthetics, resuscitation and pain relief. With anaesthesia in the true sense of the term, sensations in a part of the body (local or regional anaesthesia) or the whole body (general anaesthesia) are suppressed by means of medicines. In most cases, anaesthesia is given to facilitate surgical procedures.

At the preoperative visit, the anaesthetist establishes the appropriate anaesthetic procedure for the patient concerned and the scheduled operation. The usual anaesthetic techniques include epidural, peridural, spinal and general anaesthesia. During the operation itself, the anaesthetist monitors the patient‘s vital functions and in the postoperative phase he ensures the patient‘s recovery and pain relief.
